US ELECTIONS: The Republican Party has failed in its bid to stop hand counting of votes in Florida. Democrats say thousands of votes may have been missed by computers. Later this morning the Florida Secretary of State has said that there is a deadline of 11am tomorrow NZT for the filing of results. Hand counts will not be complete by that time. Hand counts of 2 million votes are under way in four counties.
SUPER BILL: The Finance Minister Michael Cullen says he is pleased the ACT party has given conditional report to super changes. Dr Cullen says he also hopes to get Green and NZ First Party support. Cullen says he would also be delighted if National came on board.
TRAIN FIRE: Austrian rescue teams have recovered the bodies of 46 bodies from the site of the mountain tunnel train fire. At least 159 people have died in the tunnel fire.
ISRAEL: Palestinian gunmen have killed four Israelis and injured more in several incidents on the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The latest violence raises the toll to 213.
DIGITAL TV: Sky TV is down playing the impact of TVNZ’s decisions to combine with Telstra-Saturn to provide digital TV services. The head of Chirstchurch Broadcasting School says Sky and TVNZ will be in direct competition.
HEALTH TREATY CLAUSES: Changes to the wording of Treaty of Waitangi clauses in the Health and Disabilities Bill are expected to be tabled in Parliament today. The clauses will make it clear that there will be no preferential treatment for Maori in health services.
PHILIPPINES: The Lower House of Parliament in the Philippines has impeached President Joseph Estrada. The speaker took only minutes to indicate that more than one third of the house supported the impeachment.
MAIL FRAUD: The police say a crime gang from South Auckland is stealing thousands of dollars via chequebooks sent to letter boxes on the North Shore.
