APEC Ends – Tariff Cut Warnings – INCIS – Indecision 2000 – Israel – Dangerous Psych Patients - Whaling
APEC ENDS: Leaders of the 21 APEC economies meeting in Brunei have committed themselves to attempting to restart another WTO world trade round. The summit has been a success for NZ PM Helen Clark whose announcement of a lifting of tariffs on the 48 poorest nations in the world is a challenge to some of the world’s richest nations.
TARIFF CUT WARNINGS: The countries two biggest trade unions are warning that the attempt to help the world’s poorest nations by dropping tariffs will cost NZ jobs. Acting PM Jim Anderton says that the total imports from the 48 poorest countries in the world amount to $21 million.
INCIS: An INCIS inquiry report has made a number of recommendations to help prevent IT cost overruns in the future.
INDECISION 2000: Both sides in the battle for the White House have gone back to court today. Al Gore has offered to drop all law suits if George Bush agrees to a state wide recount in Florida. George Bush is going to court trying to stop all hand recounts. Jeb Bush has defended the decision of Katherine Harris to refuse to accept recounts. Once overseas ballots have been received tomorrow
ISRAEL: A 19-year-old died in a Hebron refugee camp after an ambulance was stopped from attending him . In addition a German man died in a missile attack on the outskirts of Jerusalem. In total over 230 people have now died during seven weeks of violent clashes.
DANGEROUS PSYCH PATIENTS: Heads of forensic psychiatric institutions are meeting to discuss how they can prevent violent incidents involving mental health patients.
WHALING: Delegates from several whaling nations have said that some whale stocks have recovered enough to allow commercial whaling to resume. Greenland whalers say that whaling is part of their culture. Icelandic whalers say there are so many whales now near Iceland that they have become a nuisance.
