OPEN SKIES AGREEMENT: NZ and Australia will today sign an open skies agreement which will allow Qantas and Air NZ more access through each others airspace.

LABOUR PARTY: The Labour leadership has given the party membership the strong message that Labour needs to stay in office for at least another term. The PM told party faithful that being in government for one term was futile.

US ELECTIONS: Republicans and Democrats have both filed written submissions to the Florida Supreme Court on the issue of the inclusion of hand counts in the Florida election result.

PERU: The Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has announced he will quit his post amid a corruption scandal. The resignation follows a string of corruption probes.

JAPAN: The embattled Japanese PM has dismissed suggestions he might resign as a way out of a political crisis.

AUCKLAND GRAMMAR: A scrutiny of enrolment procedures at Auckland Grammar has found that 14 students were offered positions they should not have been offered. The school has also been told that a $10 administration/enrolment fee is illegal.

TAINUI: The chairman of Tainui’s executive is waiting to hear from the Minister for Treaty Negotiations over a $13 million payment the minister has delayed.

WHALING: Maori leaders who attended a World Council of Whaling meeting say they will pressure the government to put into law their right to harvest stranded whales.

CLIMATE TALKS: An impasse between the EU and the USA has bogged down climate change talks in Europe.
