US ELECTIONS: Election officials in Florida’s Palm Beach County are now asking for more time. Judge Charles Burton says he wants up to 16 hours more to complete reviewing ballots. Broward County has finished its recount and the unofficial lead of George Bush over Al Gore is now 408 votes.
EMPLOYMENT CONFIDENCE: The Employers Association say that it is too easy to say that employers are comfortable with the Employment Relations Act at this stage. A business confidence survey has found 72% of employers think the ERA will make no difference to their employment plans.
FIJI: Police in Fiji have cautioned the NZ High Commissioner for his comments about the May 19th coup. The High Commissioner, a Maori, says that he spoke out to avoid hiding behind indigenous rights.
GLOBAL CLIMATE: Greenpeace is calling on the world to put pressure on the US to fight global warming. Global talks on climate change in the Hague collapsed at the weekend over disagreements over carbon sinks between the US and EU.
SEA FLOODS: Landslides in South East Asia have caused devastation and loss of life in several countries.
CONSTABLE BASHED: The Mayor of Twizel says the community is shocked about an attack on constable Shane Lacy while on patrol on Friday night.
TAINUI: The chair of the Waikato-Tainui executive Kingi Porema says he is unable to suggest a solution to the banking crisis facing the tribe. He says the executive would like to go back into negotiations with the bank.
FACTORY FIRE: At least 47 people have been killed in a factory fire in Bangladesh. 900 mainly female workers had been locked inside the factory.
TV1 POLL: Matt McCarten says that the Alliance must change strategy or risk oblivion following a Colmar/Brunton TV1 poll that showed the Alliance on 2%. Of the minor parties only the Green Party was over the 5% threshold.
SMOKING: A research report has found that cannabis and tobacco smoking have similar effects on respiratory health.
