MENTAL HEALTH: The High Court has ordered the mental health review tribunal to re-hear a case involving a dangerous mental health patient. The man has convictions for setting fire to his partner.
HEALTH BILL: A Government MP, Judy Keall, has admitted that the Health and Disability Bill has suffered because it is being pushed through in a tight time frame.
VOLUNTEER POLICE: The police may make more formal arrangements to improve the back up by volunteers of lone rural police officers. Police called on volunteer fire brigades to come to the assistance of two police officers under attack in recent incidents.
ISRAEL: Five opposition parties in Israel have called for elections to be held as early as possible. Meanwhile fresh violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip has led to more deaths.
ADULT LITERACY: The government is putting $2 million into adult literacy but workers in the field say much more is needed. One group, Workbase, says over 1 million adults have insufficient literacy skills.
SOLOMON ISLANDS: A peace monitor in the Solomon Islands says he is sure that rebels have more weapons that have not yet been surrendered.
STUDENT ALLOWANCES: A survey of mature students at Canterbury University has revealed that many of them face severe hardship to attend university.
BSE: The European Commission has put forward plans to ban bone-meal stockfeed to combat mad cow disease.
FOOD LABELS: Caffinated energy drinks and cholesterol reducing spreads would have to carry labels saying they were not suitable for children.
NETBALL: The Silver Ferns have beaten South Africa this
