Toddler Killed in Car Jacking – Date Rape Trial – US Elections – Body Blow To Gore = Murder Charges – OSH Law Changes – Babyfood Euro Meat Scare – Scooter Danger!

TODDLER KILLED IN CARJACKING: A car jacking in a Sydney St ends in tragedy with a toddlers death. A manhunt is now underway. The thieves turned off the ignition after stealing the car – turning off the air conditioning. The stolen car was dumped less than a km away. In spite of a massive search it took three days to find the child. Police say they did everything they did to save the kid. It is not known whether the mother will face charges. The thieves may be charged with murder.

DATE RAPE TRIAL: On Day Seven of the date rape trial in Wellington the judge sums up. The judge said the jury was there to judge the person not the offence of date rape, which he described as a scourge. The judge said he core of the case was to be found in the symptoms the woman suffered afterwards. The jury was told a person does not have to be sober to give consent. But that in some circumstances a person could be incapable of giving consent.

US ELECTIONS – BODY BLOW TO GORE: Two courts have delivered body blows to Al Gore’s fight to count the votes in the US Elections. The judge said found there is no statistical evidence proving legal votes were there. The Plaintiffs have failed to show requisite levels of proof., he says. Republicans are ecstatic at the decision. Gore’s lawyer David Boies says the judge misunderstood the law and did not even look at the ballots. Appeals have already been filed.

MURDER CHARGES: A 25-year-old has been charged with the murder of a man whose body was found in the Waitakere ranges.

OSH LAW CHANGES: The government has begun a review of the health and safety in employment act. Robyn Burns widow of a man who died in pig slurry talks about her husbands death. Labour Minister Margaret Wilson is proposing a zero tolerance approach, an increase in maximum fines, spot fines and the removal of the OSH monopoly on prosecution. The CTU says that it is silly that the fines for breaking fishing rules are worse than for unsafe workplaces. Employers are not happy with the proposals.

BABYFOOD EURO MEAT SCARE: The government has no intention of banning European Beef and Sheap meat imported in baby food. The EU today ordered a complete ban on animal products in animal fodder.

SCOOTER DANGER! Warnings about the dangers of scooters. One boy who is still riding broke his ankle. Another little girl bashed her head and also still has her scooter. Agencies want kids to wear gear. Helmets and pads are good says official. American consumer commission says kids under 8 probably do not have the skill to ride scooters – or the strength to tighten fastenings. Another person recommends teaching kids to keep the handlebars the right way round. In Australia one child has been killed. Do not ride on the road is a good rule too.
