CHINA PROTEST: Former PM Jenny Shipley says she did not tell police what to do during a protest in Christchurch against the Chinese President Jiang Zemin. The police have been seriously criticised in a Select Committee report released yesterday.
REGIONAL GROWTH: A new report says urban areas are now out-performing rural areas in economic growth. 12 of 14 regions are showing growth according to the National Bank regional growth survey.
US ELECTIONS: Al Gore and George Bush are still waiting for the Supreme Court ruling that could settle the US Election. Al Gore thinks he is still in with a shot. Many Americans just want it to be over.
FIJI: The Commonwealth special envoy to Fiji says he will need to have further discussions before there is any resolution to the crisis. He says his task is to investigate and to find solutions.
DUMPING INVESTIGATION: The Ministry of Economic Development is to hold an inquiry into the dumping of Korean whiteware in NZ. Fisher and Paykel who complained say they are pleased. An importer says they will cooperate.
AUCKLAND POWER PAYOUT: A member of the Auckland Consumers Trust say they are not trying to delay payouts of $150 million of dividends to consumers. The trust met last night but failed to make a decision.
VICTIMS RIGHTS: The head of victims support says that while he is delighted with moves announced by government a significant gap still remains with government over the issue of compensation for victims.
AUCKLAND RAIL: The Mayor of Auckland is suggesting the private sector fund the bid to take over the Auckland rail network. Mrs Fletcher has just returned from an overseas trip looking at public-private partnerships.
WEST COAST LOGGING: The West Coast timber association say they are used to the idea of not logging native timber any more. The logging of rimu will end in just over a year.
