Superpower Standoff – Qantas Money trouble – Cancer Treatment Crisis – Vietnam Vets – Lake Omapere

- SUPERPOWER STANDOFF: The United States Secretary of State’s expression of regret over the midair collision that killed a Chinese fighter pilot is not enough for China. China is still demanding the US say sorry before they release the crew of the US spy plane that was forced to land on Chinese soil and return the plane. The Pentagon says it is not sure what the status of the US detainees is. China is not ruling out a trial over the crash and the US violation of Chinese air space. The US says they were in international air space.

- QANTAS MONEY TROUBLE: Qantas NZ is reported to be in money strife, and Qantas Australia is said to be interested in buying the franchise.

- CANCER TREATMENT CRISIS: Patients at Auckland hospital will now have to wait up to five months for cancer treatment, and Auckland hospital is calling for help from doctors around the country. A staffing crisis has forced them to tun off a radiation cancer treatment machine. Auckland has 33 radiation specialists, it needs 48.

- VIETNAM VETS: Vietnam veterans suffering from exposure to Agent Orange could be in for a better deal, after Prime Minister Helen Clark agreed to meet veterans to discuss a better compensation package. The vets’ children have suffered serious health problems as a result of their fathers’ exposure.

- LAKE OMAPERE: Slow death of Lake Omapere is today being blamed on bureaucratic procrastination by local Maori. It is being slowly strangled by oxygen weed.
