Creche Aggression – Ansett Plane Flies Again – Bert Sutcliffe Dies – Southern Drought – Aids – Boat People – Taranaki - $12 Million Lotto Weekend

CRECHE AGGRESSION: A study in America has discovered that the more time people have been in pre-school care the more they are aggressive later in their life. The study says 17% of kids who spend more than 30 hours in care display behavioural problems compared to 6% of those who spend just 10 hours in care. NZ educationalists say that the studies do not apply in NZ because of the strict curriculum. However they do still have problems with tricycles.

ANSETT PLANE FLIES AGAIN: One of Ansett’s grounded Boeing 767 air planes is back in the air again following a Civil Aviation Safety Authority inquiry.

BERT SUTCLIFFE DIES: Cricketer Bert Sutcliffe died today aged 77. New Zealand’s Bradman, he played in 42 tests scoring 2727 runs. Sutcliffe’s family were morning a man who was more than a cricketer. He was also a family man. Sutcliffe was NZ’s first sportsman of the year in 1949. NZ Cricket created a medal in his honour.

SOUTHERN DROUGHT: The drought on the East Coast of the South Island crept south today into Otago. In South Canterbury wells are drying up and well diggers are having to go deeper. Farmers have been banned from taking water from 55 rivers. Further south the Shag river has dried up near Palmerston. The water level in the Opua Dam is six metres below where it should be. Some rain is on its way, but not nearly enough.
