The World in Context -
Bulletin #2
What’s new on context?
Here is a sampler of our context analysis of selected issues.
We have posted four cyber-actions this week:
Save the Heaphy and
Hollyford Tracks http://www.greens.org.nz/campaigns/petition_heaphy.pdf
Tegel
don't be Chicken! Say no to GE http://www.greenpeace.org.nz/alerts
Save
Lake Tangimate Wetlands http://www.context.co.nz/submissions/submission1.htm
Stop
the Toxic Mine Planned for Reefton! http://www.context.co.nz/submissions/submission2.htm
The
minister of conservation’s office informed context that by
law a written reply from a minister must be via snail mail,
so our cyber-activist had to include their full postal
address. And the Manuwatu regional council’s office reckoned
our online submission form was not legal, we are pursuing
that issue as you can
imagine.
We have been drawn
into the Waitara police shooting issue. At the time of the
shooting on Sunday 30 April 2000 we decided not to publish
the identity of the policeman who shot Steven Wallace out of
our sense of
good taste. Also we felt that there were
many more pertinent issues arising out of the shooting, such
as the relationship between the police and Maori
communities, the functioning of the police complaints
authority to name but two.
Interestingly for us was that
in the week prior to and since we have had dozens of
enquiries for background material on the shooting. We will
be following up on the complaints authority and our
community’s apparent struggle between harsh sentencing
and
restorative justice.

With
the announcement of sweeping changes to the structure of New
Zealand’s defence forces this week,
we have been
tracking who has been saying what and have some
cyber-activity in mind for the near future, do stay tuned.

When
the high court threw out the ERMA approval of GE research
done by our AgResearch we face a new twist in this sorry
tale. We are planning to get engaged with this issue as ERMA
holds its secret
reconsideration.

We
have taken to posting a selection of newsletters and plan to
increase the offering. Starting with
a group of Sri
Lankan nationals living in New Zealand and others who are
try to foster the conflict resolution efforts of many in
their homeland. A small group in Gisborne put out a handy
Environment update and we have
made contact with a
person in the Solomon Islands who is part of group calling
itself civil
society.
