OCR Cut – Police Rape Case – John Yelish – Runaway Train – Great Train Robbery

- OCR CUT: The cost of borrowing just got cheaper. Some say the Reserve Bank’s OCR cut today – from 6% to 5.75% was too cautions. In the US, the OCR has been slashed by 2 points this year to 4%. Reserve Bank Governor Don Brash says the more cautious approach from New Zealand has sound economic reasons. Builders hope the cut in interest rates will increase consumer confidence. The news is a pick me up for a sluggish real estate industry. A One News business reporter says Don Brash is hedging his bets, because nobody really knows what world economy is going to do.

- POLICE RAPE CASE: A court in Rotorua heard claims an on duty police officer demanded sex while questioning a woman while investigating a theft. The officer allegedly violated the woman and forced her to perform oral sex on him. The officer has been suspended on full pay since being charged, police say that will be reviewed if he is convicted.

- JOHN YELISH: The row over Helen Clark’s description of John Yelish as a murderer has brought new claims in Parliament today. Richard Prebble says the cost of the settlement is more than thought. The question of who asked for confidentiality about how much was paid to Mr Yelish in an out of court settlement goes on. Helen Clark and Attorney General Margaret Wilson are overseas today.

- RUNAWAY TRAIN: A driverless train with industrial chemicals on board in Ohio ran amok. A Locomotive approached from behind, hooked on and dragged the runaway train, then an engineer got on board and hit the brakes.

- GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY: A retired dentist and pilot living in Hamilton may hold the secret of where Ronnie Biggs train robbing gang stashed their cash. He claims he may have been inveigled into transporting the booty.
