SOUTHERLY BLAST: The worst road conditions in years are being experienced in the South Island, especially Dunedin, following a cold southerly blast.

MCVEIGH EXECUTION: Timothy McVeigh has been moved to the death house in Indiana in which he will be executed at midnight tonight. Protestors and media have gathered to observe the execution.

UNIVERSITY FUNDING: The head of Canterbury University is warning that there will be a united front from universities to the government's offer of a 2.6% rise in funding in return for a fee freeze.

TEACHER TRAINING: A coalition of groups has suggested that teachers could be bonded to teaching in return for assistance to pay for teacher training and towards degree qualification.

ISRAEL: Thousands of Palestinians have been marching at the funerals of three women killed yesterday by tank fire. Palestinian doctors say the women were killed by darts, fleshettes, packed in with the tank shells. Meanwhile efforts to secure a negotiated peace continue.

UK TORIES: Britain's Conservative Party is still casting about for a new leader following the UK general election. Michael Portillo remains the front-runner.

GEORGE BUSH IN EUROPE:Thousands of Spaniards have been marching through Madrid protesting a tour of Europe by US President George Bush.

TRANZ RAIL AND GISBORNE: The Mayor of Gisborne says that it is time Tranz Rail stated publicly what its plans are for the Gisborne rail link. A Tranz Rail spokesman says a decision will be made within three months.

PRISONER SPOTTED: There has been a positive sighting of a prisoner Kevin Polwart, who escaped last week from Rimutaka Prison. He is thought to have purchased camping equipment.

NETBALL VICTORY: NZ's netball team the Silver Ferns are being hailed as the best team in the world following their victory over Australia.
