SUB-CONTINENT SUMMIT: There has been fighting in Kashmir during a summit between Pakistan’s President General Musharraf and India’s Prime Minister Vajpayee. No breakthrough on Kashmir is expected at the summit in which talks have been described as cordial. An agreement to talk further will be considered a significant achievement say officials.
NUCLEAR GUINEA PIGS: The Minister of Veteran Affairs Mark Burton says he is satisfied that NZers were not used as guinea pigs in nuclear tests conducted in Australia. Campaigners remain sceptical and say that UK data on radiation levels is highly unreliable.
LUNDY MURDERS: A Palmerston North man, Mark Lundy, charged with the murder of his wife and child will appear in court this morning for a depositions hearing.
PEPPER SPRAY DEATH: Police say people should suspend judgement about the death of a man sprayed with pepper spray until all the facts are known. Russell Hamilton died after going into a coma minutes after being sprayed.
AUSTRALIAN BY-ELECTION: Political leaders in Australia are waiting anxiously for by-election results in the Astin seat in Melbourne. The vote count showed only 50 votes between the Liberals and Labour and the seat now hinges on special votes.
PHARMAC: The Government’s drug agency Pharmac is hoping to save money for the taxpayer through a new national purchasing plan. Huge savings are not expected to be made in the first year.
ENVIRONMENT COURT: A local government leader says it is getting to the stage that only rich overseas investors can develop anything here because of the cost of getting plans through the Environment Court.
LAKE MURDER: Police investigating the killing of a man near Mangakino in the Central North Island are still working on Jason Johnson’s movements before he died.
BOOZE BUSES: The Police ACC and the LTSA have joined forces to increase the number of booze buses on the roads this winter. Four more buses will be brought into service in August, bringing the total to nine.
