GREENS SOAR IN POLITICAL POLL: The Greens have soared to their highest ever rating in the latest CM Research poll. Over nine percent. The Green Party are attributing the support to their stand on the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification.

Poll results in crucial party vote:

Labour 49% up 1
National 29% down 2
Green 9%
Alliance 3.6%
ACT 3.4%
NZ First 2.4%

Shipley’s personal indicators are taking a hit. Fewer think she is capable, and more people think she is narrow minded. Among National voters only 37% think she has performed well.

National President Michelle Boag says the poll outlines what she expected, that they have lots of work to do.

MAORI TV POLL: People also polled on Maori TV Channel. Almost 32% approve while 60% disapprove.

HUNTER FOUND: A hunter missing in the Kaingaroa forest for several days has been found, alive, but only just.

TRAMPERS RESCUED: Ten trampers have been airlifted to safety from the Tararua ranges. The trampers say they were pleased to meet the helicopter. The ten trampers say they were concerned at the prospect of another night in the bush. The tramp was practice for a trek in the Himalayas.

TERESA CORMACK: Police seeking the killer of Napier girl Teresa Cormack in 1987 say they would like the public to dob in anyone they are concerned about, especially people reacting oddly to the recent media coverage of the murder inquiry.

CONCRETE ACCIDENT: About ten Wellington car owners today got the shock of their life today when a concrete bucket discarded its contents high in the air above a street. The car owners were terrified. This is not the first accident at the building site where a worker died last year.

POWER CRISIS: Price rises could be on the cards for electricity users if people do not save power. Mercury Energy has till now given customers 30 days notice of any changes in policies, it is changing that to just 48 hours. Mercury says it cannot rule out raising its prices but will not be looking at doing so till mid September at the earliest. Power savings slumped on Saturday along with Bledisloe cup hopes. However barring the failure of a thermal power station Minister Pete Hodgson thinks we will be okay with the savings we are making.

SOE LEAK INQUIRY: The man challenged with plugging the information leak on State Owned Enterprises NZ Post and TVNZ says he has narrowed the number of suspects to just 10 people.

SUICIDE BOMBING: Israel has been shocked by another suicide bombing in three days. Another restaurant was attacked by a bomber, but only the bomber died. Twenty people were injured. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for today’s blast. Israel has blamed Yasser Arafat again. Israel is stopping short of massive retaliation so far. Palestinians are calling for tomorrow to be a day of rage.

ROYAL LOVE CHILD MOTHER: Heather Tonkin the mother of a royal love child appeared in court today. She avoided a trial accepting diversion on charges of making a false complaint to the police.

POLICE BEATING: A Greymouth man is devastated that a police officer who beat him up has received a commendation. A police inquiry initially dismissed the allegations. Later the officer was acquitted on charges of assault in relation to the incident.
