REFUGEES: A plea has been made to Australia to provide urgent food and medical aid to mainly Afghani refugees on board a Norweigian freighter.

GOLD MINE: The Australian mining company GRD McRaes is signalling it will accept the Government's decision not to allow it to expand its planned West Coast gold mine.

EAST TIMOR: The UN administration in East Timor is warning that some elements may attempt to disrupt elections over the next couple of days. East Timorese voters are about to elect an assembly to draw up a constitution.

FIJI: So far 165,000 out of 451,000 eligible voters have voted in Fijian elections.

ISRAEL: The US is calling upon Israel to withdraw its forces from Beit Jala in Eastern Jerusalem. Israeli tanks stormed into Beit Jala hours after it assassinated a leading Palestinian political leader.

RAFTING DEATH: Police say there was an element of bad luck involved in the death of a woman in a rafting accident near Queenstown.

LAND WARS: Property developers fear councils are becoming too heavy-handed following a dispute in Long Bay north of Auckland over the compulsory purchase of some coastal land for a park.

VACCINE MIXUP: A mother says her child was given a third dose of the MMR vaccine in spite of the fact she had filled in a form denying consent for the vaccination.

GE FREE TEGEL: The chicken producer Tegel has joined a number of other companies in going GE free with is chicken feed.
