Police say they couldn't have done anything else. Say no-one could have predicted his decision to use the off-ramp

AUCKLAND DROWNING: Family and friends have farewell young Chinese girl who drowned in Auckland. The girl 12 - disappeared in May - her body was later found washed up and a post-mortem discovered nothing suspicious. Mother of the dead girl does not believe it was an accidental drowning however. Police say they are keeping an open mind but that there is no evidence.

ACT AND NZ FIRST CONFERENCES: ACT and NZ First are holding conferences today. ACT says young mums should be treated as an investment. NZ First was given a rev-up by Tu Wyllie. Winston will address the conference tomorrow.

MP ASSISTS ESCAPER: NZ First MP Tukuroirangi Morgan says his office is shattered to find it assisted an escaped woman prisoner.

KAKAPO NAMES: Naming suggestions for six new Kakapo chicks unveiled. Four female two male chicks. Names include Ellie, Boomer, Trevor and Morehu. The people who came up with the names meet the chicks. There are only 62 Kakapo in the entire population.

Sport:

RALLY OF NZ: Rally of New Zealand: Tommy Makinen in the lead by more than a minute with Mitsubishi. Didier Auriol lost a wheel after hitting a rock. Kiwi Possum Bourne holds on to sixth. Focus now on the flying Finn.
