Cancer Inquiry- Timor Earthquake - East Timor extended coverage - Truck Crash

CANCER INQUIRY: The HFA has released results showing 119 high-grade abnormalities were missed by the Gisborne Hospital pathologist Dr Bottril. Gisborne woman says she is fearful. 20000 smears are still to be re-read. Cancer society says up to 600 smears may have been misread. The HFA plans to reintroduce free smears in Gisborne and pay for free GP visits. The HFA will also widen its inquiry into Dr Bottril’s work.

CANCER INQUIRY: A ministerial inquiry will force Dr Bottril to give evidence. The inquiry will try to find out what went wrong. Alliance MP Phillida Bunkle wants to know why it took three years to get this far. Proposed new laws may require Drs to dob in colleagues.

TAIWAN EARTHQUAKE: 4000 injured or feared buried. Devastation from earthquake immense. Pictures of a toppled apartment building. Hospitals overrun with casualties. Young boy says all he could do was grab a hold of his mother. So far 500 aftershocks have been felt one 6.8

EAST TIMOR - Day two of operation stabilise.

Cliff Joiner live from Dili: We have all seen the images but nothing prepared me for the scale of destruction. Homeless people on the streets waiting for what I don’t know. It is very disturbing. There is plenty of evidence of the troops having an affect. Several militia members have been taken into custodyt.

DILI: Applause as multinational forces arrive at Dili’s port. Peacekeepers have so far met no resistance. Thousands of refugees are now coming out of hiding. UN representative Ian Martin is back in ransacked compound. Xanana Gusmao wants to return to East Timor soon. NZ troops are expected to spend three weeks training in Darwin before joining.
