National Radio Midday Bulletin

LEGISLATION: National says significant legislation will be introduced to parliament next week before the election in November. It will show the direction in which the party wishes to move. Labour have dismissed the move.

REFERENDUM: Voters will also get a say on the justice system on harsher sentences, hard labour and more rights for victims.

EXTRADITION: An Upper Hutt man is being extradited to India to face charges child prostitution and pornography and kidnapping.

TROOPS: The first Kiwi troops will leave from Darwin for Dili in a few hours. More Kiwi troops continue training in Dili.

AIR NZ: 1200 Air New Zealand flight attendants are considering industrial action over contract disputes. The company hopes to continue talks.

RUSSIA: Russia has intensified bombings of Chechnya in a serious effort to crush Islamic militants in the breakaway province.

IMF: The IMF have put in place a major debt relief initiative for the world’s 36 poorest nations. It is committed to wiping $36 billion worth of debt.

ARTHRITIS: The Arthritis Foundation is calling for anti-bullying work in schools after revelations that two teenagers with the condition have been bullied at school.

EDUCATION: The need for quality pre-school education is the theme for a major convention today, including pay parity.

PRISON GUARDS: More than 90 prison guards have been taken hostage during jail riots in Turkey. At least a dozen prisoners have been killed as radical left-wing prisoners fought guards for seven hours. Details are still sketchy.
