EAST TIMOR: ABC is reporting that Australian troops have dispersed - without gunfire - a group of gathering militia outside of Dili as surly Indonesian troops leave and hand over to peace keepers.

EAST TIMOR: Black smoke blots the skylight. Troops burn their remaining buildings as they leave. Prospects of the remaining - joyful people - not good in a scorched earth.

PETROL PRICES: Shell announce a further three cent price rise in 91 and 96 octane petrol.

ELECTION CAMPAIGN: Campaigning has started for the general election. National wants to bed in the main issues, tax, industrial relations and trade. Labour doesn't and has three different issues.
