MILITIAMEN SHOT: Two pro Jakarta militiamen have been shot dead near the town on Suai in Western East Timor – two Australian soldiers are injured. The shootings happened during an ambush by the militia of a peace-keeping patrol. General Cosgrove says he is aware of a risk of a counter-attack. He said he regrets the deaths of the militia members.

RAIL CRASH: Officials investigating the London rail crash say the final death toll may not be known for some time.

CANTERBURY UNI: The Minister of Tertiary Education says a spending spree a decade ago is the real reason for Canterbury raising its fees. Bradford says Canterbury spent $100 million on capital spending.

URGENCY: Parliament is set to resume at 9am. Last night legislation on the rights of victims was sent to a select committee.

INDIAN ELECTION: The BJP Party looks likely to win a comfortable majority in the Indian elections beating out the Congress Party.

BUS STRIKE: Strike action by Stagecoach bus drivers are expected to continue to cause problems today.

INDIAN TEST CAPTAIN REPLACED: Mahommed Azarhuddin has been dropped from the Indian test cricket team and Sachin Tendulkar will now captain the side.
