Pakistan Coup – False Passports – West Coast Dam – Crime Referendum – East Timor: Wiranto – Auckland Student Protest – Cricket

PAKISTAN COUP: The Pakistan government of Nawaz Sharif has been dismissed by the army. The army chief will address the nation shortly. Television station and PM’s residence have been overrun by troops. Former Pakistan PM Benazir Bhutto – in London - says it is a very serious situation.

FALSE PASSPORTS: Police in Auckland are investigating the sale of false documents which claim to allow the purchaser citizenship of Aotearoa.

WEST COAST DAM: Experts are returning today to the site of the West Coast Dam which breached yesterday to assess the stability of the situation.

CRIME REFERENDUM: Norm Withers, the man behind a referendum for tougher sentences is confident of public support. He also doubts the latest crime figures which show crime is falling.

EAST TIMOR – WIRANTO: Indonesian armed forces commander General Wiranto has called for joint military operations on the East Timor/West Timor border.

AUCKLAND STUDENT PROTEST: 60 Auckland students have been evicted by police at 5am this morning from a protest on the grounds that they were threatening examinations.

CRICKET: India have had a good third day and are currently on 302 for 2 a lead of 171 with two days to play.
