Melbourne Cup - Foreign Doctors - Plane Crash - Britomart - Tax Cuts

MELBOURNE CUP: King Of The Cup Has Done It Again. Bart Cummings wins the Cup again with Rogan Josh. Crowd of 100,000. A day without peer in Fashion in the field. $3 million dollar race. On course bookies put $15 million with nationwide more than $100 million on. $7.60 paid for the win. Number 11 win for Cummings. Kiwi horses quite a way back. Cummings says the Cup is hard to win. We had a plan and it worked quite well.

MELBOURNE CUP: For a couple of minutes each year Wellington is proud to be part of Australia. A chance to forget the cup that must not be mentioned. Function at Auckland race course. Wellington bars have lively atmosphere. Tourist says he can't find a TAB. NZ TAB took $6.7 million on the race.

FOREIGN DOCTORS: Government launches a $5 million campaign to assist foreign doctors to qualify to work in NZ - but they will have to agree to work in remote areas - a leaving pathologist Yasmine Fahme, five years on the DPB, is scathing of the package.

PLANE CRASH: EgyptAir Crash: Signals coming from black box flight recorder picked up by US searchers. Investigators are pulling pieces of the plane together. Both flight recorders started to send messages when they hit the water. US salvage and coastguard vessels are in a race against the weather. Fear remains that it could be a terrorist attack. I hope no one will draw any conclusions - says President.

PLANE CRASH: The most serious crash involving a 767 occurred in 1991 in Thailand involving a plane built at the same time as the latest crash plane. That crash involved a fault. It is not known whether the fault was fixed in the EgyptAir plane.

BRITOMART: Auckland Council has terminated the Britomart project. Work on railway interchange tunnel is continuing. Challenge to build a transport terminus continues says Mayor. Councilors pleased with the result. Victoria Carter says certainty is good for the city.

TAX CUTS: Government has moved swiftly to remove differences in opinion between English and Shipley on timing of possible tax cuts. Labour says the Treasurer is a little bit cautious and that the PM is now at war with him and that they will both shoot themselves in the foot. National wanted tax as an election issue. But it is not simple. National will now face scrutiny over its promises.
