Price For Doone To Go Must Be Made Public - ACT

Tuesday 25th Jan 2000
Ken Shirley
Media Release -- Justice

ACT Police Spokesman Hon Ken Shirley today said any deal struck between the Government and Police Commissioner Doone for him to "fall on his sword" or be sacked must be made public.

"Based on the events that have lead to today's Cabinet consideration of Peter Doone's future he should not be in line for any form of golden handshake. The way Labour handles his exit from the top Police job is a real test of their rhetoric on payouts to public servants.

"There may be contractual arrangements that do set out compensation to Peter Doone in the case of his demise. If this is the case the Government must make that public to assure the public that their promise of "openness and accountability in Government" was not just opposition bluster.

"Once the Government makes its announcement on the Police Commissioner all attention will be focused on the financial arrangements for him leaving the job," said Hon Ken Shirley. ENDS
