Alliance pleased fees are finally coming down

Immediate release 31 January 1999

The Alliance is pleased Dentistry fees are being reduced and said that this is one of the first steps to removing barriers to tertiary education.

"This move is the first positive step towards a free education system in the last ten years," Alliance Education spokesperson Dr. Liz Gordon said.

"The reduction in Dentistry fees is a good first step in dealing with the appallingly high fee barriers to tertiary education our young people face.

"While the government has reduced the highest fees in the country I would also like to see fees for all public courses progressively reduced.

"I am concerned at reports that Universities such as the University of Canterbury have may have a declining roll this year. A factor blamed on high fees by the University.

"Reducing barriers to tertiary education is vital if we are to create the highly skilled workforce we need.

"Education should be made free and the Alliance is committed to moving towards that goal overtime," Liz Gordon said.
