Govt admission of failure over ACC

Pressure from the Opposition over the Government's ACC reforms has paid off for Women's Refuges - but the changes don't go far enough, Opposition ACC spokesperson Gerry Brownlee said today.

"The National Party welcomes the Government's admission of failure over its ACC plans with its changes to the industry category risk for Women's Refuges.

"But what about the other social service agencies, churches, and charity groups like Plunket, the Salvation Army, IHC, the Richmond Fellowship and the hundreds of small businesses?

"Dr Cullen would not have to suffer the embarrassment of this type of back-down if he was big enough to recognise that his Bill is bad for all of New Zealand and should be abandoned completely.

"Tinkering at the edges of the ill-thought through reforms to ACC won't solve any of the fundamental and widespread problems.

"Many Government MPs know they are in trouble over the ACC reforms. There is still a chance to re-think the plans completely," Mr Brownlee said.
