Act casts off shackles from National bind

Act has turned its back on its former ally and admitted embarrassment at having supported National in Government.

MPs at Act's party conference in Auckland yesterday fired the first salvos in what could be a nasty fight for the right and centre-right vote.

High-profile MP Rodney Hide began the aggression by saying the party had supported National in the last parliamentary term only because there was no alternative.

"Wasn't it hard propping up that National Party?" Mr Hide said in a speech.

"Wasn't it embarrassing? How hard was it to be supporting them with their lack of ideas [and] intellectual laziness?
