Too Long To Wait for Democracy

Waiting 13 months for a new election in Rodney District is too long, ACT Party local government spokesman Owen Jennings said today.

“The Minister of Local Government is to be commended for taking the decision to put a Commissioner into Rodney District, but 13 months is too long to wait for democracy to be established,” Mr Jennings said.

ACT had already written to the Minister requesting a change in law to allow for the temporary role of a Commissioner, but on the basis that Rodney residents would get early access to the democratic process.

“Six months should be the maximum period for democracy to be sidelined with a Commissioner in place. ACT will be seeking to have the time period till the election shortened when the legislation enters the House,” Mr Jennings said.
