Minister Of Name Changes Needs Some Substance

Changing the name of the Benefit Crime Unit and reclassifying overpayments isn't going to change the fact millions of dollars are not going where they should," says National MP Belinda Vernon.

"Whether its clients or customers, benefit crime or benefit control, WINZ or DWI - we've yet to see the verbose Steve Maharey deliver tangible results to those who are dependent on the benefit system.

"Isn't this the Minister who has supposedly spent the last '9 long years' developing the solution to the social policy conundrum? There are a lot of inquiries, taskforces, consultation and compacts - but what we need is some action.

"Mr Maharey is spending a lot of time on the semantics; it's time he got stuck into the substance," Ms Vernon says.
