Meeting With Chinese Public Security Delegation
Minister of Police Hon. George Hawkins' meeting with a Chinese delegation of the Public Security Bureau was an excellent opportunity to discuss mutual co-operation between New Zealand and China in fighting crime.
The Chinese delegation was led by the People's Republic of China, Vice Minister of Public Safety, Mr Zhao Yongji.
Issues discussed included ways of combating computer and internet crimes, organised crime, international drug trafficking, the trafficking of humans, and close liaison with Interpol.
"The meeting was an important opportunity to discuss issues of security and policing with the world's most populated nation.
""Mr Zhao was keen to discuss ways toward achieving mutual co-operation, assistance and extradition ties between New Zealand and China.
"Mr Zhao leads a delegation which includes several senior Chinese law enforcement officials. The delegation will meet with New Zealand Police representatives from the Office of the Commissioner, National Crime Services, and will visit the Royal New Zealand Police College," George Hawkins said.
The delegation will also travel to Auckland and will also visit Papakura Marae on Friday 26 May 2000.
