Minister shirks responsibility to immigrants

"The Minister of Immigration, Lianne Dalziel has reneged on her long-standing commitment to establish a register of Immigration Consultants because she finds the issue too controversial," says National's Immigration spokesperson Marie Hasler.

"During the election compaign, and for months beforehand - Ms Dalziel repeatedly promised to protect the interests, and pockets, of migrants and refugees by registering Immigration Consultants.

"She now refuses to confirm whether a register will ever be insituted.

"It was revealed in court yesterday that an Auckland immigration officer accepted $100,000 in bribes from an immigration consultant who was supplying fake job offers for his clients.

"That's the latest in a series of incidents which show that action is needed to protect our new immigrants, and to protect the reputation of good, bona-fide immigration consultants," Ms Hasler says.
