Green WTO Protest Irresponsible - Jennings

Green WTO Protest Irresponsible - Jennings

Friday 8th Sep 2000 Owen Jennings Media Release -- Other

ACT MP Owen Jennings has slammed the Green Party for supporting two of its MPs who are travelling to Melbourne to protest against a World Economic Forum next week.

Green MPs Nandor Tanczos and Sue Bradford will be attending a number of alternative meetings to demonstrate against the forum.

Mr Jennings said the Government claimed to support World Trade Organisation policies on free trade and many hard-working New Zealanders would be shocked to see the Green Party, which propped up the Government, actively opposing those policies.

“Mr Tanczos and Ms Bradford are in fact opposing green trade which is an integral part of free trade,” Mr Jennings said.

“It is disgraceful that Green MPs should be opposing a process that has brought hard- won, fair gains, for so many New Zealand farming families.”

Mr Jennings said it was alarming and distressing to see the Green’s “loony ideology” constantly undermining the struggle for on-going gains. “The Green Party should be ostracised for its irresponsible behaviour,” he said.

Mr Jennings said ACT supported the World Trade Organisation and an early start to a new round of free trade talks.
