Hobbs Inaction Axes Community Policing

Wednesday 13th Dec 2000

Wellington is paying the price for electing a Labour MP whose sole goal was to get into Cabinet, said Hon Richard Prebble.

It was announced today that the Newtown and Island Bay police stations will close, with the Karori and Miramar stations likely to follow. Police sources say the majority of criminals caught in Wellington come from the Newtown area.

“A year ago Marian Hobbs was elected to parliament and the citizens of Wellington Central haven’t seen her since. Marian’s goal was to make it to Cabinet and after that nothing else matters.

“As Wellington Central MP and an ex-Minister of Police I realised the importance of community policing to Wellington, so I lobbied hard to maintain a visible and effective police force on Wellington streets.

“In contrast Marian Hobbs has not assisted Mayor Blumsky’s effort to secure the future of Wellington’s police. She has not even bothered to issue a statement on where she stands.

“The central Wellington community deserves better than an inactive MP lazing safely in parliament,” said Hon Richard Prebble.
