Modern Apprenticeships Programmes For 2001

Maharey Announces Details Of Modern Apprenticeships Programmes For 2001

Associate Education (Tertiary Education) Minister Steve Maharey announced today the industries that will offer Modern Apprenticeships when it is launched nationwide from 1 January 2001.

The Government’s new Modern Apprenticeships initiative begins nationwide next year in eight key industries. Twenty-nine organisations have been selected by Skill New Zealand to provide co-ordination services for Modern Apprentices.

“There has been a very positive response from industry to Modern Apprenticeships. For the first phase of the nationwide rollout, we have chosen industries where there are identifiable skill shortages and there is likely to be higher employer demand for Modern Apprentices.

"These industries are boating; building and construction; dairy manufacturing; electricity/electrical; engineering; hospitality; printing; and telecommunications. With these industries, plus the pilot schemes which have been operating since July, we expect there will be 1,300 to 1,500 young people (16 to 21 year-olds) in Modern Apprenticeships by July 2001.

"A wide range of organisations offering a variety of delivery models will be involved in the nationwide roll out, including six polytechnics and six industry training organisations. The support and expertise provided by Co-ordinators throughout the country mean it’s never been easier for employers to take on and train apprentices,” says Steve Maharey.

Co-ordinators work with employers, industry training organisations and education providers to set up the new training arrangements and provide apprentices with one-on-one mentoring support.
