Public must be given a say on MMP

The public must be given a say on the future of MMP, Opposition Leader Jenny Shipley said today.

"National demands that the Government commits to a binding referendum on the future of MMP.

"The public believed they were to be given a chance to have their say, and research confirms this.

"The same survey, commissioned by the MMP Review Committee, shows 76% of New Zealanders endorse National's policy of letting the people, not the Parliament decide the future of MMP.

"Helen Clark must stop vacillating and get on with a binding referendum. It must be binding, because to date this Government has ignored both of the referenda in 1999," Jenny Shipley said.
