Government Unleashes Taxman On Lessees

Government Unleashes Taxman On Lessees

Tuesday 27th Mar 2001 Owen Jennings Media Release -- Other

Taranaki lessees will be shocked and angry to learn that the coalition Government is attempting to rush legislation through Parliament to snatch back one third of what is justly owed to them, said ACT Rural Affairs Spokesman Owen Jennings.

“Having found out the total amount owing to lessees, the Government has introduced bully boy legislation seeking to retrospectively tax lessees thereby depriving them of a large portion of their legitimate compensation.

“This is a disgraceful, shameful abuse of state power. Lessees who were treated in a shabby way by the previous Government during the passing of the Maori Lands Reserve Act will be shattered by this treacherous move.

“This compensation is for loss of capital value. It should not be taxed. The Government has revealed it withheld tax on the payments made to lessees who took the early offer of compensation and solution despite the Parliament making it absolutely clear that tax would not be withheld,” Owen Jennings said.
