Stretching Summer Even Further!

Sunday Concerts at Nathan Homestead Continue

Due to popular demand Manukau City Council’s Leisure Services team is extending its free summer outdoor concert series.

Council’s arts staff have planned two more outdoor concerts at the Nathan Homestead (Manurewa). The finale of the 2001 Summer Concert Series features the Thrân Maggie Celtic Band with their unique blend of Celtic music combining the sounds of drum, bass, guitar, fiddles, whistles and highland pipes. Held at 2pm on Sunday 8th April, music lovers can enjoy the sounds of traditional Irish music as well as numbers from U2, Van Morrison and other contemporary Irish bands.

The second concert is by the band, Musica Antiqua, a regular performer at Pakuranga concerts. To be held on Sunday 3rd June, Musica Antiqua will take listeners through a vocal and instrumental journey through musical history from Baroque to the present day. For the first time they will add to their traditional early musical repertoire with a programme including songs and instrumental pieces by Monteverdi, Fernando Sor, Bach, Schubert and the beautiful Bachieras Brasileiras number 5 by Villa Lobos.

Operations Manager, Brett Jude says “Council is organising this event to help make the arts more accessible to our community. We’d love everyone to bring their families and a picnic and enjoy two hours of entertainment.

“Our previous concerts included the New Pacific Music Ensemble, the Vox Nova Trio, and the Manukau Youth Orchestra. The last concert by jimjaz4 was a great success and was attended by 150 people. The Otara Music Arts Centre is also continuing with its lunchtime concert series.

“Hot off the press is our quarterly Arts in the City catalogue which includes a full description of these concerts and other events, exhibitions, art classes and workshops around the city. Copies of the catalogue are now available at libraries and art centres.”

Bring along your picnic basket and blanket and be entertained! If wet the concerts will be transferred to Nathan Homestead theatre.
