Prebble Slates Refusal To Debate Apple Crisis
ACT leader Richard Prebble has condemned the government's refusal to debate the crisis in the apple industry.
Government MPs in Parliament today declined leave for a snap debate on the issue.
"The apple industry earns $750 million of export income a year. Experts agree that conservatively one third of all orchardists are facing ruin," Mr Prebble said.
"The crisis has been brought about by the government's decision to deregulate the industry without having any plan as to how to meet losses that go back to the old Apple and Pear Marketing Board.
"Growers will be annoyed that the government is not prepared to even discuss the issue," Mr Prebble said.
