Forestry education partnership welcomed

A new partnership between the forest industry and the University of Canterbury's School of Forestry will help build expertise in the sector, says Minister of Forestry Pete Hodgson.

The industry and university announced today a Visiting Industry Fellow programme, which will involve senior industry executives in university teaching, and a Forest Industry Internship scheme, which will provide short-term work placements for students to complement their studies.

"I am very pleased to see the industry and the university cooperating in this way to enhance the quality of the education available for a vital New Zealand industry," Mr Hodgson said.

"Forestry is a very large and growing contributor to the New Zealand economy. If it is to reach its full potential the industry needs to invest in the skills of its next generation of managers. The programmes announced today are a step in the right direction."
