John Carter re-elected as senior whip

National's caucus re-elected Northland MP John Carter this morning in a special caucus meeting, Opposition Leader Bill English said today.

Mr Carter tendered his resignation this week. It is National Party protocol that the senior whip tenders their resignation when a leadership change occurs.

"I welcome the re-election of John Carter. We have always worked well together in the past and I look forward to this continuing in the future," Mr English said.

Alec Neill continues as National's junior whip.

The role of the whips is to support the leader and to ensure that there is good communication between the leader and the caucus. Whips are also involved in a number of House and administrative roles.
