Auckland Grammar an Example of Zoning Failure

Auckland Grammar an Example of Zoning Failure

Monday 10 Dec 2001 Donna Awatere Huata Press Releases -- Primary & Secondary Education

The woes of Auckland Grammar show why zoning must be scrapped, ACT Education Spokesman Donna Awatere Huata said today.

"It is unacceptable that one of New Zealand's best schools can't even plan classes or timetables because of zoning.

"Zoning puts parental wealth and privilege ahead of ability. It is blatantly racist and elitist.

"The parents who are selling everything in order to shift into Grammar's home zone are simply doing the best they can for their children within an unfair system. But there are other parents who can't afford to move or send their kids to live with relatives. Their children deserve a level playing field, too.

"The removal of zoning is the only hope for children who aren't lucky enough to live in an affluent, leafy suburb with a decent school just down the road. Mr Mallard must abandon zoning in order to give every child a fair chance," Mrs Awatere Huata said.
