Muriel Newman ACT Whip

The ACT caucus today elected Dr Muriel Newman as its whip.

The whip's job in ACT has been done by Hon Ken Shirley for the past five years, in addition to his duties as ACT Deputy Leader.

At the ACT caucus retreat, Ken Shirley indicated he wished to relinquish the whip's job in order to concentrate on his spokesmanship on Health and his campaign in Tamaki.

"Muriel Newman has been one of ACT's rising stars," ACT Leader Hon Richard Prebble said.

"I am sure she will perform well for ACT. Her election was unanimous, and the caucus expressed its thanks to Mr Shirley for five year's service as whip. To be both whip and Deputy Leader has been a large workload which he has carried out with distinction," Mr Prebble said.
