Maori Television Appointment is Surprising

Maori Television Appointment is Surprising

Thursday 14 Mar 2002 Penny Webster Press Releases -- Broadcasting

ACT Broadcasting Spokesman MP Penny Webster said today that the appointment of Canadian John Davy as chief executive of the Maori Television Service was surprising news.

"I welcome the fact that the appointment is apparently based on `skills' rather than ethnicity.

"However, it is surprising that the best person for the job is an auditor-accountant working in Manila with little television or radio experience.

"Almost no information is available about First Nation radio in Canada, or any role Mr Davy may have had with the service.

"ACT New Zealand remains opposed to the creation of a separate Maori television channel," Mrs Webster said.
