TVNZ Charter Will Operate As Planned

11 June 2002

TVNZ's public broadcasting charter will be introduced as planned from July 1, Broadcasting Minister, Marian Hobbs said today.

"I am disappointed it won't be possible to pass the Television New Zealand Bill before the House rises for the General Election but the charter will be included in TVNZ's business objectives detailed in its statement of corporate intent," Marian Hobbs said. "The government also provided $12 million in the Budget to implement the charter.

"The government chose to include the charter in the TVNZ Bill to ensure its status but its implementation is not affected by the bill not being passed.

"The bill will remain a priority for the new Parliament."

TVNZ will continue to operate as a state owned enterprise until Parliament changes its status to a crown company.
