Government Takes Volunteers for Granted
Friday 28 Jun 2002
Voluntary organisations are being taken for granted by the Government says ACT MP Gerry Eckhoff.
"Fire fighters in rural New Zealand are all volunteers. Yet they are never recognised for their contribution but now they get their 25 year gold star for service posted to them!
"It is apparent that most voluntary organisations are being squeezed financially while government shovels out cash to those who choose not to work. It is high time organisations like the volunteer foremen, St John Ambulance Service, blood donors, and many others, received a tangible reward for their dedication and effort.
"That recognition might take the form of a tax break or at the least a certificate, which says thank you. The government seems to believe in ignoring those who contribute to society and rewarding those who do not.
"The government should get its priorities right," Gerry Eckhoff said.
