Labour's Rural Promises Are Too Little, Too Late

Tuesday 9 Jul 2002 Gerry Eckhoff Press Releases -- Environment & Conservation

Labour's promise to make the Resource Management Act more user-friendly for farmers is too little, too late, ACT Environment Spokesman Gerry Eckhoff said today.

"Since the last election, Labour has ignored rural New Zealand. Labour has done nothing to eliminate the back-breaking RMA or reduce Government meddling in the primary sector.

"ACT is the only party that believes in and understands property rights. Property rights are the environment's best defence. The RMA has totally abused property rights.

"Tinkering with the RMA won't change things. What is needed is a radical overhaul of all the legislation that holds farmers back. Only ACT is determined to have a bonfire of red tape and introduce lower taxes so that rural New Zealanders have the freedom to thrive," Gerry Eckhoff said.
