New Zealand Help For Typhoon-Ravaged Islands

12 July 2002

New Zealand will provide $150,000 to the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) for relief work on the typhoon-ravaged islands of Chuuk, International Development Minister Matt Robson said today.

“New Zealand’s contribution will help the Federated States of Micronesia authorities mobilise immediate relief efforts,” says Matt Robson.

According to reports, the death toll from the typhoon is over 40, with survivors in dire need of food, water and medical supplies. The typhoon also damaged food crops, infrastructure and private property.

“New Zealand expresses its sympathy to the government and people of the Federated States of Micronesia,” says Matt Robson.

New Zealand’s contribution comes from the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID) disaster relief programme.
