Pastoral lessees of the South Island High Country will soon feel a chilly wind from the Beehive, as Labour plans a tenure review.

"Prime Minister Helen Clark has signalled changes on the way in her Speech from the Throne. Green Party leader Jeanette Fitzsimons has also voiced frustration of the slowless of land being resumed by the Crown.

"Add in to the mix the Commission of Crown Lands being sidelined, and it is very clear that a major thrust to acquire more tracts of publicly held land is underway.

"These policy changes appear to be occurring with absolutely no consultation with the affected lessees. The Prime Minister's love of tramping is well known, and she is hell bent on acquiring an even bigger play ground,"
