Swain kicks off Spaghetti Junction

Transport Minister Paul Swain will turn the first sod on the Central Motorway Junction (Spaghetti Junction) project in Auckland this afternoon at 3.40pm.

Also in attendance will be Associate Minister of Transport and MP for Auckland Central Judith Tizard, Auckland Mayor John Banks, Alan Bickers from the Transit NZ Authority and representatives of the Auckland City Council, Infrastructure Auckland and the Freeflow Project Alliance.

The Central Motorway Junction Project aims to improve the overall efficiency and safety of the junction, which is the busiest in New Zealand, with some 200,000 vehicles passing through each day.

Once the project is completed it will provide a more efficient route to the Port of Auckland, additional connections from the Northern motorway to the port and connections from the Northern to the Northwestern motorway.

The long-awaited project will have a major impact on Auckland's traffic problem.

The sod-turning will take place at Glenside Crescent off Symonds St. Mr Swain will be available to talk to media at the event.
