Disappointing End To Seal Bashing Case

The Department of Conservation’s decision not to prosecute four Gisborne women who tormented a dying seal is disappointing, said New Zealand First law and order spokesperson Ron Mark.

“It ignores a public abhorrence for violence against animals and is sending the wrong message to young people,” he said.

“Violence is not acceptable behaviour in our society and aggression against animals should be treated seriously.”

The four young women, apparently under the influence of alcohol, had repeatedly hit the mature leopard seal with driftwood.

“It is disappointing that a case which received such disapproval by the wider community is now being swept under the rug by the government department charged to protect New Zealand’s wildlife.

“Public embarrassment is not a substitute for the judicial system and DoC should reconsider its position,” said Mr Mark.
