Oakes’ Early Release Is An Insult
Next week’s early release of convicted Christchurch murderer Gay Oakes is an insult to her victim’s family, says New Zealand First’s law and order spokesperson Ron Mark.
“Gay Oakes was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole term of ten years. She should serve at least ten years,” said Mr Mark.
“It is unbelievable that she is to be released after just eight years because of her ‘contribution to prison life’. Her actions have ruined countless lives, including those of her six children.
“Gay Oakes killed someone and then sought to conceal the crime. Her claim that she was a battered woman was not upheld by the court,” said Mr Mark.
“The Parole Board’s decision to release Gay Oakes before her 10 year sentence goes against the wishes of 92 percent of New Zealanders who signed the 1999 Norm Withers’ referendum calling for tougher sentencing.”
